The garment: A long black lace evening dress with gold finish print design all over. The fabric is a cotton & nylon blend. The care label simply reads, “Dry Clean Only.” There are no International cleanability care symbols.
The problem: After drycleaning the dress the gold pigment surface design dissolved resulting in objectionable fading and uneven loss of gold finish. In this case, further testing on the gold design reveals that the design will soften and fade to some degree in any drycleaning solvent. Also, this dress is not completely safe to wet clean. Therefore, there is no guaranteed safe method of care.
Who’s responsible? The manufacturer, since this dress is labeled as drycleanable and thus must be able to withstand the recommended professional cleaning process without damage.
What to do: This dress should be returned to the place of purchase or contact the manufacturer.
